Steps down to a basement kitchen, or a heat-storage cooker that stays on all day, are worth mentioning when you book. With Cleaning Oven, oven cleaning in Richmond upon Thames costs £77 for a single.

Over a third of the borough’s housing is more than a century old: the Valuation Office puts 37.8% of its 85,800 homes before 1919, a fifth (20.3%) before 1900 and a mere 8.4% this century. Conservation areas number 85. Among the 80,704 households counted in 2021, terraced houses held 26.6% and semis 25.0%, and 62.4% of households were owner-occupiers.

Basements and front steps by Richmond Green

Along the south-eastern edge of Richmond Green, the council’s conservation statement picks out brown and red brick townhouses from the end of the 17th century and the start of the 18th, whose basements open onto railed areas at the front and whose front doors are reached by steps rising from the pavement. If your kitchen is below street level, say so on the call. Whether the cleaner comes in by the area steps or down through the hall, leave a clear way for the products and tools, because the cleaning normally happens in your kitchen. Out come the racks, the tray and the shelf supports to soak. Inside walls, both faces of the door and the rubber seal get done by hand, and where the door can be dismantled the hidden middle pane gets cleaned as well. Last of all the cleaner reassembles everything and heats the oven to show it works. Plenty of kitchens here are in flats, of course: in North and South Richmond wards that was half of households (50.4%) in 2021, and 31.7% of households there rented privately.

Large houses in East Sheen and Hampton

East Sheen Avenue is wide and lined with large two-storey Edwardian semis on big garden plots, and Sheen Common Drive is detached houses built from 1925 to 1932. Hampton is mostly houses too: across its two wards 16.7% of households were in detached homes in 2021 and only 27.1% in flats. If the kitchen has an AGA, a Rayburn or a Stanley that is kept running, it must be switched off and left to cool before the visit, and the office agrees with you when. A two-oven model is £143, a four-oven AGA £187 and a side module £100. A range cooker goes by width, £143 at 90 cm and £167 from 100 cm, and for either size a picture, arranged by phone, helps the office price it. A large garden barbecue, with a cooking area over 50 cm, can join the visit at £100.

Match days and short zone hours in Twickenham and Kew

Twickenham Stadium changes the streets around it. For fixtures expected to bring in 25,000 people or more, a special Event Zone R is enforced from late morning until 11pm, and Whitton Road, Rugby Road, London Road and others may be closed for about 1.5 to 2 hours before and after, so a home near the ground is best booked for another day. North Kew’s zone KC also runs late, to 11pm, on major event days. On ordinary days some zones are controlled only briefly: South Twickenham’s E only until 10.30am on weekday mornings, and most of Kew and East Sheen for two hours from 10am. Residents can also buy trader permits for a tradesperson working at the home, at visitor permit prices; if you hold one, mention it on the call. If not, a paid bay is simply added to the bill at its cost, £40 at the most.

Questions about oven cleaning in Richmond upon Thames

How far ahead must an AGA be turned off?

The office agrees that with you on the call, because it depends on the cooker. It has to be cool when the cleaner arrives, and the date for the visit is set at the same time.

How do I find out which Richmond zone my street is in?

Look your street up on the council’s zone list, which gives each controlled zone from TW1 to SW14 its own hours and bay types, and tell the office the zone when you ring, since permit zones are talked through on the call. Any bay the cleaner pays for is added at cost and never above £40; the price list has every item.

My house in old Twickenham is down a narrow alleyway. Can the cleaner reach it?

Yes. The cleaner carries the equipment and products from the car to your door on foot, so a narrow alleyway only adds a walk; say on the call that it is the way in. In the Twickenham Riverside conservation area, narrow alleyways run between the Georgian and early Victorian streets of a medieval village core around St Mary’s church.
