Extractor hood cleaning in London with Cleaning Oven is £28 for a standard hood and £48 for a range-width hood of 90 cm or more. On its own, a hood is charged at the £67 minimum.

An extractor hood, also called a cooker hood, can be cleaned on the same visit as the oven and hob below it. The metal grease filters come out and soak while the hood itself is cleaned by hand. The package prices bring a single or double oven, a standard hob and a standard hood together at one set figure.

Metal grease filters are taken out and soaked

A grease filter is the metal mesh or slatted panel on the underside of the hood that catches the grease carried up in cooking steam. The cleaner unclips each metal filter, puts it in to soak and cleans it separately, then fits it back once it is done. Grease that has set in the mesh over months is what the soak is for. A filter that is dented or has lost its coating stays that way, because the clean deals with grease and a damaged finish is part of the metal.

Carbon filters are left in place

Some hoods send the air back into the kitchen instead of out through a duct, and these usually have a carbon or charcoal filter behind the metal ones. Most of those are made to be replaced when they are spent, so the cleaner leaves them where they are and cleans around them. The company does not sell or fit carbon filters, or any other part. If yours looks due for a change, the hood’s manual or the maker’s model number tells you which one to order. Mention a carbon filter on the call if you know there is one; it changes nothing on the price.

Is the ducting behind the wall cleaned?

No. The clean covers the hood you can see from the kitchen: the underside where the filters sit, the front and sides of the hood, whether stainless steel or glass, and the outside of the chimney section that runs up towards the ceiling. Ducting inside the wall or ceiling is not part of it, and nor is the fan motor inside the hood. No repairs are done and no bulbs are supplied or fitted, so a hood light that has stopped working is left as it is.

Pricing a hood by its width

Measure the hood across the front, from one side to the other. Below 90 cm, a hood is booked as a standard extractor. At 90 cm and above it is a range-width hood, the kind usually fitted over a range cooker, and it is priced at the same figure the company uses for a range hob.

Standard width£28
Range width, 90 cm and up£48

The price is worked out from what you describe, so give the width on the form or the call. A hood that turns out wider than booked is mentioned by the cleaner, and any change agreed with you, before work starts.

Booking the hood with the oven and hob

Booked as part of an oven visit, the hood is charged at its own price. With a standard hood and hob, the two packages cover all three. A single oven with its hob and hood is £117; a double oven with both is £143. The oven cleaning page explains the oven side of that visit, and hob cleaning covers the pan supports and burner caps that soak alongside the filters. Every item is listed on the full price list.

Getting the hood ready

Clear the hob under the hood, since the filters come out over it and the cleaner stands there to reach the underside. Take down anything hung from a rail on the hood and anything stored on top of it. Switch the hood off, and leave the power and water on in the kitchen. If the hood sits inside a cupboard housing, the cleaner reaches the underside from below; the cupboard itself is not cleaned. Give the make of the hood on the call if you know it.

Questions about extractor hood cleaning

How can I tell whether my hood has a carbon filter?

A hood ducted to an outside wall normally has metal grease filters only. A hood with no duct, which blows air back into the room, usually has a carbon filter as well. If you cannot tell, give the office the make and model on the call.

Will the cleaner change a bulb or a filter?

No. The company supplies and fits no bulbs or filters, and no other parts. The visit is a clean of the hood and its metal filters, which go back in once they are clean.

Is a range hood priced the same as a range hob?

Yes. A range hood and a range hob, each 90 cm or wider, are both £48. Booked together they are two items on the same visit, and each is charged at that figure.
